Spain is the second most popular holiday destination in Europe and that for good reason: it offers a long coastline, vibrant cities such as Barcelona and Madrid and a rich history. The Moors conquered Spain in just seven years during the 8th Century. The reconquest of Spain by the Christians lasted almost eight centuries and was only regarded as completed in 1492. In this historic year for Spain, Christopher Columbus, flying the Spanish flag, discovered America and Antonio de Nebrija first published the grammar of a non-classical language. Today, Spain is a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarchy. The largest country on the Iberian Peninsula consists of 17 autonomous regions and two autonomous cities. Due to this regionalism, four languages are still spoken in Spain. By the way, the expression "fighting windmills“ comes from one of the most famous European novels of the 17th Century: Don Quixote by Cervantes.
