The Czech Republic is a landlocked country in Central Europe which is characterised by fertile landscapes divided by high mountains. The longest common border is with Germany (810 km) to the West and Northwest, and Poland (762 km) to the North. The Czech Republic was founded on 1 January 1993 and joined the European Union in May 2004. One in eight of its 10.5 million inhabitants live in the capital Prague, one of the cultural capitals of Europe. Besides its picturesque location on the Vltava River, the city is famed for its outstanding achievements in music, literature and film. The Czech Republic is also a great sports nation, especially in winter sports. In the last 15 years it has won the World Ice Hockey Championships five times as well as Gold at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano. These days the best players in the country earn their money in the North American NHL professional league.
