Country filter: Cyprus

This easternmost and most densely forested Mediterranean island is located at the geographical crossroads between Europe, Africa and Asia. The island has been inhabited continuously since the Neolithic Age and was strongly influenced by a thousand years of Roman and Byzantine rule. In ancient times, Cyprus was also regarded as the most fertile of Mediterranean islands and was particularly well known for good wine and high-quality olive oil and was even self-sufficient in grain. Today, the tourist oriented country is divided into the Greek South and the Turkish North. After Malta and Luxembourg, Cyprus is the third smallest state in size within the European Union, which it joined in 2004.
